The unsung hero’s of the Civl War are the many women that stepped up to the plate without being asked. Still today with little to no recognition women played a huge role in the civil war. The civil war also meant independence for woman also not only the African Americans.
Clara Barton brought women out and wanted equality for all. She founded the American Red Cross and performed nurse duties during the Civil War. She was a teacher in a time when mostly men held that role, she was also one of the first women to work for the Federal Government.

She claimed to be the conductor of the Underground Railroad. She returned and freed thousands hundred slaves. Harriet was also a scout and spy for the United States Army during the civil war. BONUS FACT: In 2016, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that the countenance of Harriet Tubman will appear on a new $20 bill.
Many women had to learn to support themselves after their fathers, brothers and husbands had left for war. Some women even turned to prostitution to provide for their children and themselves which were left behind. Anna Jones was considered to be one of the first troop groupies. She was hired to be a private friend or companion to the Major’s in the army. She was also thought to be a spy.
Then there was Mary Tepe also known as “French Mary” followed her husband into battle. She served as a cook, nurse and carried water and whiskey to the men on the battlefield. She was later decorated for valor. Hundreds of unknown women marched alongside their male counterparts as they believed in the cause the men were fighting for. Through all this women were sustained by the enthusiasm born of love and country. These women still wanted to fight in a war that clearly only wanted men. Women were often hired as spies. Women were able to get into an enemy’s campsite using her female attributes. There she could get the men talking while being drunk.
