What are the five characteristics of life ?
1. Energy-organisms require and use energy to be alive and reproduce
2. Cells-cells are membrane bound units, make up everything
3. Information- organisms process info they acquire from the enviro and genetic genes
4. Replication-almost everything organism does is so it can reproduce
5. Evolution- organisms are a product of evolution
Define scientific theory
-A generally accepted explanation for a general class of observations (theory of gravity)
-it describes a pattern in the natural world and a process that creates that pattern

Cell theory
Pattern: all organisms are made of cells
Process: all cells come from pre existing cells
What is the theory of evolution
Pattern- species are related by common ancestry, their characterisitcs can be modified through generations
Process- evolution by natural selection

A trait that increases fitness of individual in an enviro
Define fitness
Individuals ability to produce offspring, high fitness=more surviving offspring
