Instagram has also recently taken up this feature, and these posts are able for viewing for up to 24 hours for all who follow the user and anyone who uses Instagram, provided that the “Story” is posted from a public account, rather than a private one. The user that posted the “Story” (on both Snapchat and Instagram) can view a list of each account name that has seen the post, but does not provide information as to how many times a single post is viewed by a specific account. Although these mobile social media applications are indeed similar in their mechanisms of function, there are distinct features that set the two apart. Snapchat runs on the basis of self-deleting posts, such that when a user sends a photo or video to one of their “friends”, he or she has the option of setting a timer, ranging from 1-10 seconds, essentially choosing how long the recipient has to view the photo or video once it is opened.
