Buddha, and the more modern-day Nel Noddings have all begged the question, “What does it mean to live a good life?” Aristotle’s main view aims at happiness, and focus on the self. The Buddha and Nel Noddings both believe that one should not fully focus on the self, but more on the selfless acts for others. Each of these philosophers has determined their own proper way to lead a good life and I will examine each philosophy through comparison to the eldest, Aristotle. I believe Aristotle’s philosophy to be agreeable, but I feel he is missing certain key components which I will discuss by the end of the essay. Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BCE) believed that happiness as the ultimate good, and the end of a good life. He wrote his noted “Nicomachean Ethics,” which was written not to provide step-by-step…
An American feminist, educationalist, and philosopher, Nel Noddings is best known for her work regarding the ethics of caring, which has subsequently positively impacted the entire educational field. Her first work, Caring: A Feminine Approach to Ethics and Moral Education is an encapsulating analysis of caring and of its role in ethics. By delineating the guidelines for caring, by explaining the controversy between natural caring and ethical caring, and by describing wrong actions, Noddings…
Also, because the individual was “hesitant” to let the children spend the night, I further believe that Hume would advise the individual to do what is best for their family. Hume’s ethics and approach strongly contrast the previous philosophers, but he helped to expand the minds of other modern philosophers. Similar to David Hume, Nel Noddings philosophy is rooted in feeling. Noddings’ ethics focus on care: “natural caring” and “ethical caring.” “Natural care” is when one care for someone they…
Carol Gilligan and Nel Noddings are some of the feminist philosophers who supported feminist care ethics. They emphasized the importance of women as a part and basis of moral standards. Their work also stressed the deficiency of current moral theories, policies, and principles in terms of disregarding, underestimating, and degrading the values and morality of women. In this paper, I will support Giligan and Noddings works and show that the female ethics should be the basis of moral standards.…
This philosophy stresses the needs of the learner rather than the subject. It also opposes traditional education practices such as rote learning, constant drill, and dependence on textbooks. Additionally, this view of education gives educators a model of an ideal teacher, which was presented by Nel Nodding. This ideal teacher emphasizes the importance of identifying strengths and interests of students. This leads to teachers being able to acquire an idea of how to develop curriculum for…
I thought I was one of Aristotelian values. After reading Nel Noddings, I see the choice to leave for Afghanistan awoke my natural care a mother has for her children. I switched in an instant to wanting to get away and fulfill an obligation to a learned habit of protecting those I love. Three months into my deployment I had the chance to meet local children and it hit me. I am a mother. This is something that you cannot simply do but a method that is learned over time and becomes second nature.…
Education or the quality of education is one of the most talked about issues within the educational community and even in the world. There has always been a consensus that the quality of education depends on the individual learning ability, educational environment and the teacher’s ability to adapt to the individual learning needs. The debate that is frequently argued is that education and the quality of education cannot be simply determined by political, economic, and social factors. The…
as a social act, is the foundation of human society. Also, mothering is joyful experiences for parents in many ways. However, when mothering gets associated with, or only with, gender politics, the fact that we are always “some mother’s child”(Kittay, Love’s Labor) is easily forgotten and the mothering effort becomes disrespected; hence the foundation of community and the value of human relationship become disavowed. The notion of maternity is not simply a socially constructed illusion or a…
According to Van Leeuwen (2017), he states, that Jeremy Waldron (2006) does not agree with the perception of private property and that all are entitled to "basic needs" and has the right to exercise these freedoms. He posits that they are "looking after their own needs." Van Leeuwen (2017) also presents the generous version from the perspective of theorist David Schrader. Schrader (1999) argues that not having a home is a "violation of basic liberal respect." He believes that having a home…
activist, and author Parker Palmer that good teachers “are able to weave a complex web of connections among themselves, their subjects, and their students... The connections made by good teachers are held not in their methods but in their hearts.” One aspect of teaching that I believe should be encouraged more is for happiness to be an aim in teaching. One philosopher and educationalist that saw this to be of importance was Nel Noddings, who greatly influenced education by her contemporary…
