In the academic library that I chose to examine, finding the reference desk is no easy task for the unfamiliar patron. With three major entrances and six floors to navigate, this library is an epitome of what most libraries would strive to have: boundless space for patrons and a vast, growing collection. The patron, however, could easily take one glance at this gargantuan building and easily become overwhelmed, despite the services that this one building contains, such as being combined with financial aid, the information technology (IT) center, and areas to grab coffee and snacks. It is my hope that upon observing and engaging with the reference department that they will prove themselves to be helpful and accessible to patrons known and unknown. I chose to examine the reference desk at 2:30 pm on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, when I expected that there would be more opportunities for patrons to utilize the resources of the reference desk more effectively, as it would later in the academic school day. Though it is near a major…

For the first part of this assignment, my task was to observe, listen, and evaluate two very important facets of the library experience, the library environment and the staff’s interactions within that space. With that noted, my personal goal was simply to pay attention. This goal might seem small, but whenever I visit a library, my attention is usually focused on some question that needs to be answered and I remember little about my experience outside of the information I was looking for. A…

Patronage can be viewed as good or bad. Political patronage frequently involves Federal Governor in Council appointments (which are typically made on the advice of cabinet), appointing campaign staff to an official’s office staff, or appointing party loyalists to the senate and judiciary (Lemieux and Noël, 2006). Many Canadians consider patronage an illegal activity that must cease. However, it is vital to the political system. In fact, patronage was essential to the building of the country…

Legal Measures/Imperial patronage to Christianity: As stated before, during Constantine's time as Emperor the benefits of imperial patronage to the christian community, and church were enormous. Most important is that Constantine gave signal to a kind of change in regime that would end up reaching down, and bringing up the Christian church as a force not to be trifled with in the imperial society as well as with the largely pagan Roman state. Then it becomes a question as to what kind of…
