In addition, listening means to be focused and or engaged in a conversation. To improve our listening skills, we need to practice a characteristic called, “active listening”. Active listening means to not only hear the words a person is saying but to actually put “a conscious” effort to understand the message being sent right across. Listening differs from hearing in which listening requires putting all your senses into it and hearing is just an earshot of a sound. An example from a personal experience, as I remember, happened when I was in a training room with other coworkers. The instructor gave us an example, between listening and hearing. He asked us to first place one of our hands on our chin. And as he did the presentation, he placed his hand on his cheekbone. Everyone put their hand on their cheekbone and did not do as the instructor asked. You might want to ask yourself why have we done that if the instructor clearly asked us to place one hand on our chin, not on the cheekbone? I believe all sorts of communication revolve around listening. For instance, in businesses, listening can lead to a better customer experience; therefore, understanding customer’s needs can turn into productivity.
