This essay will look into the biological and behaviorist approaches which are two different important terms that explains some parts of Psychology. However, there are another approaches which are important as well, all of them have something to contribute in Psychology.
Firstly, it is going to explain the biological approach. Afterwards, it will expose the three different concepts in each approach. Moreover, it is going to evaluate the concepts so it will examine the strengths and weaknesses. Secondly, it is going to explain the behaviorist approach. What is more, it will determinate the different concepts that behaviorism approach has. In addition, it will evaluate its concepts so its strengths and weaknesses. …show more content…
Strengths which are related with reductionism, determinism, individual differences and applications. Reductionism because explanations of biological approach are reductionist and these explanations have often proved useful. () For instance, theories as the restoration theory of sleep and theories of schizophrenia that highlight brain structure. Determinism justifying that on biological approach have identified important factors, such as genes and brain chemistry, that have a huge impact on human behavior.() Individual differences that proved that in the biological approach, genetic factors play a role in explaining individual differences in intelligence and why some individuals can develop certain mental disorders while others are less likely. Applications such as chemotherapy that biological approach has proved that it really works in order to deal with some mental disorders (e.g schizophrenia, depression, anxiety). Then there are some weaknesses which are related with reductionism, determinism and nature-nurture. Reductionism because it is not possible to achieve a complete understanding of human behavior with just looking into the biological factors. For instance, environmental factors can influence the development of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, but because of the biological approach these factors are ignored. Determinism because some biological explanations are deterministic and often involve focusing on genetic factors. () Nevertheless, the influence of genetic factors on behavior is not really direct. () For example, “Plomin et al. (1990) found in a twin study that genetic factors influence television watching”, but the reasons to know how genes can effect in those situations, it is really difficult. Nature- nurture, the biological approach is always focused on genetic factors, in explaining behavior, therefore, environmental factors are determinate as less
