I. Topic: Welcome & Introductions, Group Rules, Confidentiality
II. Goals:
• Ice breaker activity so all participants and facilitators can learn everyone’s names and something about them to get to know each other better
• Establish group rules so all participants are aware of the guidelines and expectations for group
• Define grief and loss and symptoms of depression so that members can feel they can identify with each other
• Normalize feelings of depression and low self-esteem in children and adolescents

The group will look at the pros and cons of each way of expressing grief. The facilitator will lecture to the group how harming the body, or another person, or property can lead to serious consequences. The facilitator provide different examples of healthy grieving and referrals if they want more information. If the session gets too emotional for members of the groups, breaks and “one-on-one” meetings will take place if necessary. II. Goals:
• To prevent future self-harm behavior and suicide
• To enhance problem-solving skills
• Provide information and resources on how to cope with harmful thoughts
III. Plan:
For this session, the facilitator will use problem solving therapy to help each member over challenges caused by the loss of their parent/s. The facilitator will help the members come up with different ways of solving problems (suicide, depression, constant crying). For this session, the facilitator will use motivational interviewing with each member. If the session gets too emotional for members of the groups, breaks and “one-on-one” meetings will take place if necessary.
