If a dancer does not take steps to stay healthy and whole, they may face an injury that could stop them from dancing entirely. With overuse being such a large contributor to injuries in dance, steps must be made to prevent it. The best way to prevent overuse is to make sure to use the proper technique, as overuse “injuries are caused by very subtle incorrect postures in training, compounded over and over” (“How to Prevent Dance-related Injuries”). In relation to many dancers’ habit of dancing through pain, if a dancer has “pain with the same movement or activity repeatedly,” it is important to see a doctor about the cause, as that can prevent it from becoming a major issue in the future (“How to Prevent Dance-related Injuries”). Along with taking these precautions, the many other factors contributing to injury in dance can be prevented by wearing shoes and clothes that fit, drinking enough liquids, being aware of physical limitations, and making sure to warm-up and cool-down before and after dancing (Solomon and Russell). If a dancer finds that they have issues with nutrition, “visits to a nutritionist” may be recommended, as maintaining bodily health and energy are extremely important to a dancer (Schoene). It is also recommended that a dancer gets plenty of rest for the good “of both their physical and emotional health” (Russell).
