The author Val Gokenbach defines professionalism as a chosen and paid occupation that requires prolonged training and formal qualification (Val, 2012). The professionalism in nursing was initiated by Florence Nightingale by setting a high standard of practice (Val, 2012). Professionalism is the applied perception of each professional nurse with regard to the scope, code of ethics, standards of practice, and social policy of nursing (Joyce, 2013). A professional nurse should possess honesty, responsibility, need to believe in human dignity, pursuit of knowledge and treats all patients equally (Val, 2012). Professionalism can be demonstrated by a nurse’s attitude, appearance, and by the willingness to provide help to people in need (Val, 2012). According to American Holistic Nursing Association (AHNA), the goal of holistic nursing is to heal the person as whole being (what is holistic nursing, 2016). The concept of holistic nursing dates backs to the period of Florence Nightingale and is based on nightingale’s works (Daniel, 2016). In order to provide holistic care, nurse must consider the care of entire person, rather than the disease alone. The nurses need to consider the approach of mind, body, spirit, emotion and environment of the patients to provide a holistic care (Nina & Darlene, 2013). Holistic nursing is the nursing care provided by honoring the patient’s view about health, beliefs about what is health and values of health, and also by considering the beliefs and concerns of family members and community (Noreen, 2001).
