The rivalry between these two men, Borromini and Bernini, saw each one of them trying to come up with new styles in order to outshine the other. The competition towards determining who is better than the other became stiffer. Following the rivalry between him and Bernini, Borromini decided to work on his own as independent contractor. Therefore, he abandoned the St Peters project that he was doing in conjunction with Bernini and claimed that Bernini had refused with his payments. Being a temperamental person, the rivalry between them stirred up more anger and hatred in Borromini. Bernini continued getting more credit for various artistic works including a piece of work he had done with the help of Borromini.
