The emotions are not visible. Emotional labor is “the actual result of the exchange that is noted as the outcome, rather than the route by which the outcome was achieved” (Mastracci, 2012, p. 23). Emotional labor is used by victim advocates. It is their job to make sure the victim(s) are stable and they need to be there to help them recover from whatever they experienced.
The author makes a clear statement about what emotional labor actually is. She states that emotional labor “comes into play during communication between worker and citizen and it requires the rapid-fire execution of” emotive sensing, analyzing their own affective state and comparing it to the other individual, judging which alternative responses will affect the other and choosing the best one, and finally, behaving in such a manner that suppresses or expresses an emotion so that the desired response from the other is achieved (Mastracci, 2012, p. …show more content…
It goes to show how common emotional labor is among the work force. The author covered each topic of emotional labor very well and transitioned into the next topic smoothly. The only thing I would probably suggest would maybe try to incorporate either more examples, or maybe examples of situations from workers in fields that wouldn’t expect to experience emotional labor. I honestly think this book is a valuable piece. Living in a world today where crime and pain occurs daily, we have the men and women to thank who put their lives on the line for us, whether or not we are in danger. Those first responders who do everything in their power to protect us and make sure we are okay deserve our utmost respect. It takes very strong and special people to do what they do, to see the pain, the horror and even death and keep a straight face on. Those some may have not mastered the art of keeping on a straight face, there are those men and women who have and who will not give up even if they truly know there is no way to make it
