The results stated that when using a challenging curriculum that focused on teaching academic words and cross-linguistic aspects of word meaning did, in fact, improve the performance of both ELL and EO fifth graders. This article was very helpful and provided a very strong study representing the importance of learning new vocabulary for ELLs and EO students. I felt that the study was descriptive and backed up the information provided throughout the article. This article also provided a significant number of charts that also represented a remarkable amount of the study that was done to complete the information. I do, however, feel that there could have been more research questions provided. Similar to the article, Closing the Gaps, my final article, Vocabulary Development of English Language and English Only Learners in Kindergarten, also covers the importance of students learning vocabulary in hopes of enhancing their English language. This article’s main purpose is to inform readers on how much of an impact vocabulary has on a child’s early literacy development. These articles helped make me aware of the importance of incorporating many vocabulary words into my classroom. These two articles informed me that by learning more words, a student can improve their language learning. I was shocked when I read that students who were learning a new language, learned vocabulary words much faster than students who only spoke English. In my classroom, I will be sure and expose my students to many words to enhance their language. Vocabulary can also have an impact on a student’s reading comprehension, if the student does not know very many words, then they are likely to have difficulty comprehending what they are reading.
