Defensive Climate is a situation where one perceives or anticipates some form of threat and feels like they need to defend themselves from the unknown and become cautious with their surrounding and people around them. For example, your supervisor makes statements that imply that you are always late, and you know you have only been late once: you tend to be defensive. On the other hand, Supportive Climate is a state of a stress-free and healthy environment, where one feels comfort towards others allowing fluent interaction with others. An example of supportive communication would be correcting one's mistake, giving positive criticism and acknowledge the good one has done.

The aura and working conditions changed drastically, scheduling was very heavy, workload increased, many employees quit and concerns were overlooked. One day, on my way to work I was hit by drunk driver and was rushed to the emergency and later admitted for observation, until the next day. I called my employer soon as I got home and faxed doctor’s note exempting me from work for a week. Upon my return to work, I handed in the original doctors note to my manager. As stated in everyday encounters that “Evaluation communication evokes defensiveness”(Wood & Schweitzer, 2007, p. …) Two months later during a year-end evaluation, the manager called me and presented me with a very bias review which stated that, I did not meet the company's satisfactory requirements and that I was not going to receive the annual bonus because I had missed work for the entire week without communication. When I tempted to remind him that I had handed him the doctors note in person, he literally walked me out of his office. I was very angry I became defensive and did not trust him or anything he said, so I quit for I did not like to be talked down
