Developmental psychology is defined as a scientific approach which aims to explain how children and adults change and grow throughout the years. Lifespan developmental psychology involves the study of constancy and change in behavior throughout the life course (Baltes, 1987). To discuss the theory of development I chose topics that focused of the beginning of an individual's lifespan all the way to the end of life. Many of the theories related to development are focused initially from an individual's childhood as this is believed to be the period where the most growth and change occurs. Establishing a healthy sleeping pattern is necessary to executive functions. Longitudinal information was collected from a sample of mothers observing their childs’ sleeping pattern. As children develop, parents were asked to comment on sleep maturation. An objective assessment of children’s sleep can was conducted with actigraphy, a method that relies on motor activity to estimate sleep duration and quality. The analytic findings of the actigraphy suggest that sleep duration and quality show a direct relation to developmental outcomes. Adolescence is defined as the transitional period between puberty and adulthood in human development, extending mainly over the teen years and terminating legally when the age of majority is reached(Dictionary.com) The cultural purpose of adolescence is to gradually prepare children for the role of an adult. This developmental stage is often a time where an individual may explore their autonomy further and start to desire the need for independence and embark on the road to self discovery.
