Common sentences for marijuana offences could be five to ten years in federal prison. Crack cocaine offenders got longer sentences that powder cocaine offenders. Gradually opinions changed with the times and people were satisfied that drug offends need rehabilitation instead of incarceration. The Prison System has become an industry with more and more drug offends doing log sentences. In 1996 California passed Prop 215 which made the growing and use of marijuana for documented medical disabilities legal. The passing of Prop 215 put state and federal laws in conflict. This was a classic people vs. government action. The people voted for legislation while the federal government had laws against their wishes and court were filed. (Marijuana laws Gradually became less harsh.) The Courts ruled that the federal laws trumped the state laws. The people of California defeated Prop 19 by a small margin and the federal laws were obeyed. Marijuana sentences gradually reduced. The Supreme Court took on a drug case in January of 2014. The case was Mellouli vs. Lynch, Attorney. Basically the case revolved around Moones Mellouli and his brush with law enforcement in Kansas. Mr.Melloui was home was searched and a sock was found with two unidentified orange piles. Mr. Mellouli was charged with possession and having control substances on the Kansas list they were not on the federal this was another of state and federal agencies.
