If it were me in the same situation, I do not believe it is my place to force him to do anything. His action to distance himself was his form of grief and that has to be respected. Although, if I had the opportunity to talk to him I would tell him how important his presence is during this time of suffering. Not only is Leah dying, but your son is confused. I would tell him how his son needs a strong parental figure in his life at this time of transition. I think the Husband’s presence would have calmed Leah more as she knew her Husband would be there for their son. If something were to be done by the doctor or nurses, I believe the best way of approaching him is contacting him and help him understand what was happening. I think the main aspect that prolonged this commitment goes back to how they relate on a personal level. Leah and Elizabeth both have children of the same age and Elizabeth could not imagine what it would be like to have something like this occur. Another thing that I believe prolonged the commitment between the two was the fact that Elizabeth felt like she needed to make up for her inability to cure her by sharing her presence instead. Elizabeth was ultimately the one who told Leah is was time to die and that her son would end up just fine. Without Elizabeth, I think Leah’s journey of letting go would have been a lot harder.
In conclusion, the story of Leah and Elizabeth interacting together can be described more than a patient and nurse. I think Elizabeth became a friend of Leah’s and Leah truly trusted her. After reading this story my dream of becoming a nurse is heightened. This has reinforced to me that I want the chance to be a Leah-type-figure in my professional setting. Not only is this something I dream of doing for the rest of my life, but it is a way for me to make a difference in the
