Thus, I must acquire the skills to provide empathy, establish rapport and trust, and be able to build a therapeutic relationship with my client. I must also be competent in all areas of health care such as expectations for cultural competency. For example, I must understand and respect the decision of Jehovah’s Witnesses to refuse blood transfusions; they believe that “not taking blood not only is in obedience to God but also out of respect for him as the Giver of life” (Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2015). To facilitate care, I must demonstrate consistent safe health practices and positive patient care. I must also have the drive to improve and enhance the nursing practice whether it may be becoming a mentor or additional researcher in solving a critical issue. I am expected to critically think in a stressful situation, and be confident in my abilities to make clinical decisions. Overall, nursing is a unique profession. It allows an individual to experience the beginning of someone’s life and also be the last person to touch someone else’s life with his or her last minutes on Earth. I am striving to maintain a high grade point average during my nursing school journey. To me, it indicates hard work and suggests the effort put into nursing practice. According to the American Nurses Association (2015), “Continual professional growth, particularly in knowledge and skill, requires a commitment to lifelong learning.” Therefore, my dedication to learning will include continuing my education to become a Nurse Practitioner, and networking with professional colleagues to encourage and improve evidence-based practices.
