A recent case that involved the First Amendment was the Town of Greece v. Galloway case. Starting in 1999, the town of Greece, NY held monthly town meetings that were started with a prayer given by a member of the town’s local clergy. Christianity was the major faith in the town but some people frowned upon this tradition; they felt it was not constitutional. In 2008, Susan Galloway and Linda Stephens sued the town of Greece and John Auberger for violating their First Amendment by favoring Christianity over other faiths.…
Socrates, the classical Greek philosopher and one of the founders of western philosophy, was accused by the people of being an atheist and corrupting the youth with his ideas. He was, then put into trial in which the jury decided that he was guilty, and finally he was sentenced to death. While being in the prison, waiting for the execution process, Crito, one of Socrates’ friends, came to visit him offering a plan by which Socrates can escape from prison before the day of his execution. However, Socrates refused to escape the death sentence. A large argument took place between Socrates and Crito concerning whether Socrates shall escape or not.…
‘The Apology’ by Plato was about Socrates’ trial. Socrates at the age of seventy he had been convicted for breaking the law against ‘impiety’. This was for offending the Olympian gods (Zeus, Apollo and the rest of them) recognized in the city and occasions (17). Socrates was allowed to defend himself but haters would not listen to his ideas. Socrates believed in speaking the truth, which was his true character and was revealed.…
In the text, Crito, a man by the name of Socrates is put in jail for a crime he did not commit. He is urged by another, named Crito, to escape from jail as it is unfair for him to be locked away for something he did not do. Although, Socrates firmly believes he should stay and face the time rather than escape. It is unjust for him to escape because he will spend his life running with no place to go and settle down, he will destroy the laws, and he should not do wrong just because wrong was done to him. It is unjust for Socrates to escape from jail because he will be running from the law without having anywhere to go.…
Throughout the book Greek Gods and Heroes, there have been several types of unusual punishment for disobeying the Gods. If I had the ability to punish a student for cheating on an exam, I would have them write a one page essay every night. Some of these punishments include Zeus and his brothers banishing their father, Cronus, to a distant island in the Atlantic. Zeus also chained Prometheus to a rock, where a vulture sat and gnawed at him.…
Breaking Stereotypes One Step At a Time Greek life contributes a lot to the average college community. Whether it being, giving student’s connections, philanthropy, or providing a fun atmosphere for several stressed college students. The affect it has on the students individually is huge too. Fraternity’s and sorority’s push each member to reach outside their comfort zone, and to strive for excellence in academics, community involvement, and personal development. “Greeks all speak a “language” that they learn in the process of becoming part of their fraternity/sorority.…
3 important myths can be learnt in Greek Mythology Have you ever thought about how every single thing we read, never advises us to make poor decisions or behave in an atrocious manner? Set during the socratic age of philosophy, The Apology by Plato chronicles the trial of Socrates on the charges of corruption of youth and not believing in the Gods. Plato, a young follower and apprentice of Socrates, documents the trial in its’ entirety from beginning to the unfortunate end in which Socrates is sentenced to death. The Apology is the trial of Socrates on a very basic and literal level but upon further inspection, one comes to realize that not only the philosopher is on trial but philosophy itself. Throughout the piece, Socrates attempts to convince the jury of philosophy’s worth and also criticize the condition of man. Furthermore, the recounting of the trial is also a protest of the hypocrisy within the Greek society that…
I. Introduction An extremely popular topic in the media today is Greek Life at college campuses. Almost every college across the United States has at least a few fraternities or sororities that end up in the news in some shape or form. Most of the time, the reason they receive attention is due to someone dying at a house, a girl being raped by a brother, or it’s revealed that a fraternity or sorority has been hazing their pledges.…
Socrates is being tried for three key reasons. Corruption of the youth, questioning the will of the gods, and undermining democracy. Socrates was a very well-known teacher among his Athenian students but he did not act properly when he was around them. He was also known for his religious beliefs and disrespect to the gods. Socrates would sometimes even question the social order of the government.…
In 1832, Greece became an independent kingdom under the protection of the Great Powers after decades of fighting for emancipation from Ottoman rule (Kokkinidou and Nikolaidou 2004:156–157). Greece was in a unique position to receive support from Britain, France, and Russia due to their past as a great civilization in Classical times. In fact, the Great Powers saw Greece’s fight against the Ottomans as a war between civilization and barbarism. Some even went so far as to view it as a continuation of the Persian Wars during the Classical Period (Hamilakis 2007:78). Although Classical Greece was a part of modern Greece’s identity, Europeans also thought of classical antiquity as part of Europe’s identity and felt that they owed Greece an intellectual…
What are the charges against Socrates as recorded in the Apology. Is he guilty of them? why or why not? In Plato’s Apology, there were several charges against Socrates during his trial.…
As a society we tend to accept and conform to the ideas of our government. We as a people tend to follow the accord of our government, rather than acknowledge that there are faults. We are willing to go to war, kill innocent civilians, and fight for our country, even if it’s for all the wrong reasons. But it’s not just in this time period or even this country. Found all throughout history is the corruption of our society, this can be seen in the stories; Rhinoceros, Saboteur, In Trying Times, and When Greek Meets Greek.…
The greatest epiphany I had was realizing that attending greek school was not a form of torture, and that in the long run, not only has it helped me, but it has shaped me into the person I am today. For the past twelve years of my life, I have attended greek school twice a week on weekdays. I always wondered the value of having to go, especially since it required a lot of juggling as it seemed to interfere with extracurricular activities and/or completing homework. It was not until a couple of years ago that I realized that greek school had a positive effect on my life. In greek school, not only did we learn how to read and write the greek language which became a useful tool in my academics in Garnet Valley, we also learned about our ethnicity…
Greek life on college campuses is an effective way to ensure that students get the most out of college, and all that it has to offer. Greek organizations actively challenge students to be a well educated, and active part of the surrounding community. However, some view fraternities and sororities on college campuses in more of a negative light due to stereotypes and generalizations, influenced by the media. Many of these stereotypes are untrue, and often over exaggerated. Greek life has many advantages to offer, and outweigh many of the misguided arguments of the opposition.…
