Throughout the Golden Ages, there has been an emergence of different theories of thought. While some philosophers became known as sophists, men who look to find truth about humans through rationalism, others turned to the Judeo-Christian God for explanation of natural disasters, fortunate and unfortunate events. These two belief systems, although very different in values, had great impact on the people of the time periods, influenced society, political and even economic aspects of life in Western Europe. Although much of the Golden Age was undocumented, texts such as Plato’s Euthyphro, and knowledge of polytheism can help determine the implications rationalism had on much of Greek society. Alternately, we have texts available from the Roman…

Cassondra Britton A Modern Day Socrates: Bob Ross Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who is considered one of the founders of Western philosophy. A man who was too progressive for his time, Socrates’ radical ideas, such as the rejection of materialistic society, challenged those whose wealth shielded them from the masses. This progressive man defied common beliefs, and confronted those who held those beliefs. An unexpected teacher of many, Socrates was a visionary whose ideas challenged the status quo and social structure of society.…
Without a doubt Ancient Greece influenced nearly every aspect of western civilization, from our architecture and literature to even our system of governing. Western cultural continually glorifies Ancient Athens, even when it probably shouldn’t. Some scholars, like Victor David Hansen, claim that the Greek victory against the Persians saved western civilizations. But the question remains, did it really save western civilization?…
Western philosophy began in the 6th century BCE in ancient Greece. These first philosophers that we know of are called “Pre-Socratics”, meaning they came before Socrates. Socrates’ philosophical prowess, however, brought forth a time that freedom of self-consciousness was first challenged. In my opinion, Socrates was the first philosopher to distinguish the value of philosophy even though they were just mere thoughts of men. In Bertrand Russell’s “The Value of Philosophy”, he addresses the very nature of philosophy itself.…

Was Socrates guilty as charged?" Socrates, an ancient Greek philosopher, is linked with Western systems of logic and philosophy. At an early age, he served in the hoplite-ancient Greek infantry, and later devoted his life to philosophy. His rather unique perspective and wisdom in philosophy attracted friends and enemies at the same time. Socrates metaphorically was the gadfly that stung the horse- Athenian state.…
Socrates was one of the most noted opponents of the Sophists. As a teacher of dialectics, he was interested in the quest for the truth rather than the art of persuasion (Joseph 110). According to some of the Socratic dialogues recorded by Plato, Socrates thought Sophists were a threat, not because they promoted atheism or immortality, but because they set themselves up as experts on the question “How is one to live?” without having the necessary knowledge. Socrates was concerned that if people’s lives were ruled by rhetoric instead of being guided by philosophy, the pursuit of happiness would overtake the pursuit of the…

The main purpose of Socratess talk is to discover the truth and to argue about the way of human life. This can be seen by the words "And if I am to carry on the enquiry by myself, I will first of all remark that not only I but all of us should have an ambition to know what is true and what is false in this matter, for the discovery of the truth is a common good. "(Page 104) and "for you will observe that we are arguing about the way of human life"(Page 99). In the last speech of Socrates, he said, "I desire only to know the truth, and to live as well as I can, and, when I die, to die as well as I can. And, to the utmost of my power, I exhort all other men to do the same"(Page 121).…
Classical Greece brought us philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; and their contributions to the world will always be prevalent in societies. Socrates is credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, believing that at the heart of all thinking is the psyche, or the mind and soul, which is more important than your physical body and therefore must be protected. His Socratic method, a series of questions developed to search for general truths, is still used widely in law schools today as a way to encourage students to come to a conclusion of a case through logical thought…
Ancient Greece is today known in history for its impeccable development and prosperity in civilization. Although the ancient Greeks had their flaws, they were undoubtedly men and women of great achievement of many things, which was really what set the basis for what we know today as Western Civilization. Humans of great thought and divinity were shaped in these ancient times of Greece; however, none were quite as famous as the Greek poet Homer. Homer's works really did shape Western Civilization in many ways including: the art of storytelling, the ideas of respect and hospitality, and finally the moral development of a character. These elements may be traced in works such as Homer’s own Iliad and Odyssey, The Aeneid by Virgil, and Dante’s…
