The Pardoner himself proves to be a very greedy person, but persistently insisted that money was the root of all evil when him himself focused on money. He finished his story and then at the end asked for penance.

This represents the hypocrisy in the personality of the pardoner as he says this while gathering penance.
The characters in his tale display great hypocrisy as well. In the beginning of the tale, the friends all act very faithful and dependable towards one another. They righteously make a decision to dedicate their lives to try to kill the person whom murdered their friend. Towards
