Significance
This present study will be useful in advancing knowledge of the effects of educating the families of those with mental illness. The majority of research done on the subject has been focused on schizophrenia and on only educating the families. Mental illness without psychosis is just as real of a mental disorder as mental illness with psychosis and it is also very common. Also educating the patient and their family on the diagnosis will also help the patient come to terms with his or her diagnosis and with deciding to get treatment. …show more content…
Research Problem 1 in every 5 adults in America experiences a mental illness. Nearly 60% of adults with a mental illness didn’t receive mental health services in the previous year (NAMI). Most of those who don’t receive treatment aren’t because treatment isn’t available but because of the stigma associated with mental health and the lack of knowledge or fear of the unknown. 90% of those who die by suicide have an underlying mental illness (NAMI). Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S
