During World War II, Japan occupied Vietnam which dissolved the rule of the French. Ho Chi Minh soon thereafter organized a liberation movement known as the Viet Minh. By 1945, the Viet Minh, using guerilla warfare tactics, battled with the Japanese army and won many of the major cities in Vietnam. Defeating the Japanese, Ho Chi Minh formed a new communist nation of Vietnam that westernized countries refused to acknowledge due to the fact that it was communist. Communism was growing rapidly and threatening free governments. If the US didn’t help Vietnam fight against the spread of communism, than this could encourage revolutions everywhere. As the war continued on, small anti-war movements soon expanded into unbeatable forces due to the feeling of weariness increasing in the Americans. The multiplying casualties, rising costs of the war, and the unhappiness of the people forced the American government to rethink their commitment in the Vietnam
