The reinforcement can be internal or external and can either be negative or positive. It is proven that if a child wants to gain approval from parents, friends or anyone, the feeling of approval is like an external reinforcement, but the happiness that is being derived from being approved of is an internal reinforcement. A child will behave and act in a manner which he or she believes will gain approval because he or she desires to be approved. “Observational learning, can happen through the meagre observation of behaviour modelled without precise shaping through extrinsic reinforcement with cognitive activities” (Bandura, 1969, 1971).
The weakness of classical conditioning is that it was far too simple and naive to be a concrete explanation of complicated and complex human behaviour. “There is no free will involve in all experiments using classical conditioning. It is also limited in explaining and describing behaviour in nature and nurture terms” (McLeod, …show more content…
While Operant conditioning is another method of learning that is established on the reaction of an individual or animal in a very mandatory and forced situation. The examples in this method of rewards based learning is getting good grades instead of failing during examinations, for a student who understand the significance and importance of the grading system would work hard and strive to get good grades instead of failing, or employees would work diligently so as to avoid getting retrenched.
Social learning theory, differentiate between learning and performance of behaviour. Therefore, observational learning in Social Learning theory can take place through observing behaviour that is modelled and be accompanied with cognitive activities without any extrinsic reinforcement. Social Learning Theory is considered as a facilitative and not a necessary condition, the behaviour is controlled, not directly experience consequences from exterior sources, but by self and vicarious
