Puberty is the process of maturing physically that leads to the capability to reproduce. For puberty to start there has to be a release of a sex hormone; for girls it is estrogens and males it is androgens. The sex organs on both sexes become more developed and they will start growing hair in different places, for boys their voices will change and overall your whole body is changing. Girls will start menarche which is the first menstrual cycle around the age of 13-14. While it is rather simple to know what sex (boy or girl) you are, there are other parts of what sex you are born that can complicate that like gender and gender roles. Gender is all the physical, cognitive, and behavioral traits that make up a sex. Gender roles or sex roles are the social expectations depending what sex you are. An example of this would be if you are a girl, you are supposed to cook, wear dresses and never swear. If you are a boy then you bring in the income, “wear the pants” in the family plus be very athletic. It is how society perceives how a woman or man should act. If a person follows the behavior that matches the gender roles that are expected then that is called sex-typed behavior. Another term that is important is gender concept that is the understanding that one’s sex cannot be altered; it is permanent. It can’t be changed even with face changes or hair and clothing changes.
