This theory describes various different ways in which humans communicate. It was continued to be furthered studied as the “nonverbal expectancy violations theory” this was based off Burgoon’s research studying proxemics. Burgoon began by studying the humans’ expectations of personal space and how people responded to the violation of their personal space and how the parties’ relationship affected the reaction to the violator. The theory continued to expand; as the years went on researchers also began to study the violations of social behavior beyond just nonverbal communication.
