Innumerous lights are being used throughout the day that can be turned off, this issue needs to be resolved because it’s expensive, it negatively impacts the environment and it overuses and wastes energy. Energy needs are met by using non renewable sources like fossil fuels, burning large quantities of fossil fuels has serious environmental and health consequences because it pollutes the air breath. Despite the fact that the students need lights during class and while working, lights are left on when the room is vacant in unnecessary places, like in the bathrooms and gym. A simple solution to this problem is by turning off the lights when leaving the room. To help save energy, instead of using traditional incandescent lights, the school could use Energy Star lights. These energy saving lights use about 70-90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last 10 to 25 times longer. They also saves $30 to $80 in electricity costs over its lifetime. Other efficient lights are the fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs are more efficient because they produce less heat. A fluorescent bulb can produce between 50 and 100 lumens per watt, which makes fluorescent bulbs four to six times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. When using a 15-watt fluorescent bulb, a 60-watt incandescent bulb produces the same amount of light. Another way to reduce energy consumption is by not turning on lights when outdoor lights can …show more content…
The quantity of paper used and thrown away is a problem because it’s wasting natural resources. The papermaking industry continues to remain energy intensive. A report by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency states that paper mills are among the worst polluters of any industry in the US. Though MCCPS does recycle, there are many other ways decrease the quantity of paper used and thrown out daily. Instead of giving out paper assignment (worksheets, reference sheets, etc.), teachers can start giving students more homework online. Aside from that, MCCPS could reuse paper and books as much as possible, so it doesn't have to be thrown them away. For example, students could use a lot of scrap paper, the back of papers, and reuse text books till it is completely unreadable. Another way to reduce paper usage is by doing simple acts like think before one decides to print. Instead of printing two papers print it double sided, or at lunch try to use handkerchiefs, rags, or less paper napkins. Using reusable plates instead of paper or plastic is more environment friendly as well. To summarize, MCCPS needs to reduce paper usage, be mindful of the amount of paper used, and try to recycle and reuse paper as much as
