Problem Statement
The summer internship program at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has not received the full attention needed to effectively reach its potential of becoming the place college students think of when looking for summer internships with the government.
The Department of the Navy has various internship programs, to include the Naval Acquisition Development Program (NADP) and the Naval Acquisition Intern Program (NAIP). These are long-term development programs which span from 2 to 3 years. My paper will focus on the summer internship program at NAVSEA.

This makes the summer internship program an important avenue for finding new talent and assisting in succession planning.
NAVSEA takes pride in their summer internship program and while the organization strives to have a robust and beneficial summer internship program, lack of a clear strategic plan has stumped their success. I saw this during my time as a summer intern ambassador.
Two issues which have stumped their success is one, the lack of properly branding the internship program as the place interns want to be to experience working in the government sector and two, the lack of predefined goals to state the intended outcome of the internship program for both the interns and the organization.
Branding NAVSEA’s Summer Internship Program.
In speaking with incoming summer interns they had a very slim view of the functions performed at NAVSEA. Their perception on exactly what NAVSEA does did not come close to hitting the mark. We build ships and combat systems to keep the Nation safe. That might not sound as exciting as working at Google, but building sleek submarines and aircraft carriers known as floating cities can be exciting, fulfilling and even sexy if sold that way. NAVSEA should seize the opportunity to brand the organization when promoting their summer internship
