Some patients’ insurances require authorizations or referrals to see a specialist, and for the office to receive payment referrals must be documented in patient charts. The first step is to be aware of the correct problem, in this case not receiving or a delay in referrals. Questions asked should be logical and based on facts. They should also be asked and answered before a bigger problem develops. Is there a problem with the processes in the office? Are patients made aware of the requirement so they can assist if needed? Is communication lacking between COC and primary care doctors in town? Asking and answering critical questions will prevent future problems. Once COC understands critical thinking, improvement will be seen immediately. Referrals received at or before time of service saves employees the time it takes to call patients, primary doctors, and insurances, while reducing the amount of money written off when insurances do not pay for unauthorized visits.
