1. This research study was also found on the ERIC database. After reading and analyzing two studies that discussed strategies on encouraging physical activity and/or education in the schools, the importance of who is teaching the class, and then also the support the school gets for physical activity, I found this study interesting since it dealt with the actual physical education class and what the children were actually getting out of the class. A school may have physical education classes but if the students are not benefitting from the thirty to forty-five minutes spent in the class, then it does them no good. The authors of this study begin their review of literature discussing the increasing obesity rates among children and that it may be due to a decline in physical activity. The researchers discuss that physical activity declines, as children grow older and that most children in the early childhood grades spend their physical activity time sitting still. They write on how many children do not participate in at least one daily physical activity that lasts ten minutes or longer and this could be a sign that the children are not getting the recommended amount of physical activity. The authors then go into the difference in physical activity among females and males and how this can definitely be a variable in the decline of physical activity. They noted that most males would continue to participate in more extensive physical activity programs over girls. They conclude their literature review discussing the opportunity and need to measure the difference between physical activity in the structured physical education classes and then at recess. They believe this will uncover some of the children’s typical daily physical activity pattern and also see how effective it actually …show more content…
Based off of evidence and conclusions made from this study, physical education classes should take place more frequently outside. Students should be encouraged to participate in competitive sports. Students are clearly more active during recess over physical education classes, so schools need to take a look at what is going on during PE class and determine if more activity needs to take place or, if necessary, more instruction to the students on motivating them to lead a healthier lifestyle. There needs to be a balance between teaching instruction and then fitness activities taking place during the class. This can refer back to a previous study read about the knowledge and education physical education teachers are receiving prior to becoming
