The seventh chapter of this book is dedicated in part to the issue of race in relation to athletic participation and academic attainment. The authors used this chapter to reference research based data that supports getting beyond initial concerns of athletics disrupting academic performance. The chapter also talks about athletic participation levels of females and the role gender plays in the academic attainment levels of females. The focus of the study was based on male and females, the researchers broke the definition of participating in sport into two categories, competitive sport and noncompetitive sport and finally no participation. The sample of this study included 491 high school students in grades 10-12 all of the same demographic background. The test given to test academic achievement was a standardized numeracy and verbal reasoning test, which differs greatly from other similar research related to this topic. The results revealed that the gender of the student participating in sport did significantly play are role in student achievement levels. Female students scored higher levels of academic performance as compared to the male students in the study.
