I was born on May 7, 1840, and I started taking piano lessons when I was 5. Music wasn’t an option in Russian schools at the time, so my parents and I never thought that I would pursue a career in music. Therefore, my parents wanted me to become a civil servant. When I turned 17, I started taking lessons with a professional pianist at the Russian Musical Society, and officially started learning music then. My professional career started when I was 22 and at 25 my work was publicly performed.
From early on, my music provoked a very good response publicly for its catchy melodies. Most say that my music was colorful and impressive during the beginning of my career. As a kid, within months I was capable of playing Friedrich Kalkbrenner composition Le Fou, as well as many other complicated pieces. Overall, my early years were definitely a success despite my late start to a professional career.
