Employees need to have one quality to be eligible to volunteer, and that is a passion for patient safety. (Sze 2008) Anyone in the hospital can volunteer to be a safety coach. Employees volunteering to be safety coaches are expected to be in good standing with the hospital. They need to exhibit critical thinking skills, respected by their peers, and a hospital role model. Safety coaches have to attend a one-hour training session before they become active coaches. During the one-hour training, they review error prevention techniques, learn how to give five-to-one feedback, and how to fill out the behavior observation tool. After they become active coaches, they need to set the example by practicing error prevention techniques.
