Perhaps the biggest factor of militia resistance to recruitment into the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War was the militia troops’ “small-producers” creed, which also impacted their religious economic, and political beliefs, as being self-sufficient (Moreland & Terrar, 2010). A large number of the population were farmers, who lived off the land and had very little to gain from war or any other incentives to join the Continental Army. They used their militias only to protect themselves when needed. The most common documented resistance to the regular army was a “refusal to enlist in the Continental Army and a refusal by militia companies to subordinate themselves to, or cooperate with, the regulars on issues such as tactics, supplies,…

Many teenagers at high schools are being recruited to the military looking for a good education that is free. Even though High schoolers after graduating go to the military without knowing what they will face once there, military recruiters need to be more specific about the military because high schoolers go to the military looking for all those opportunities they were told and to many young people are joining hoping to look for a good life their but ends up being the opposite.…
The Reserve Army of the Unemployed is a practice considered as healthy in today’s capital economy. This labor force consists of those who are unemployed and seeking a job. This percentage of the labor force is the culprit behind the high power corporations have over their employees. The reserve army is a threat to those in employment because if their employers don’t like an action the employee makes or fights for, like a raise in pay for example, the company can easily enough replace that employee. This process keeps the cost of wages from starting a price spiral.…
How would you feel as a parent if your children were convinced to join the military through deception? This is what is happening throughout the United States where representatives from the armed forces come to talk to students about joining the armed forces. While this can be a positive thing, many parents including peace groups are against this because of the pure pressure it puts on the students among other things. In order to keep students from making a decision that they don’t truly believe in as a result of the trickery recruiters make, the United States should issue a law to keep military recruiters out of high schools.…

During this time in history, the colored man was still not allowed to defend himself within the military. Douglass began to instill the importance of belonging to the United States army to the colored and promoted their inclusion among the whites. He had gained the support of enough of the population to make an impact. Finally, in 1863, as a result of Frederick Douglass’s actions, Congress had authorized colored enlistment in the Union army (8, 15). Frederick was asked to help recruit colored soldiers, including his two sons, into the Massachusetts 54th Regime, the first group ever to contain colored militia (6).…
Parkersburg High School According to Jeb Blount, in his book Fanatical Prospecting, the eleven little words that changed his life were: “When it is time to go home, make one more call.” Jeb doesn’t remember where these words came from during the course his sales career, but those few small words had an astounding impact (Blount, 2015). As an Army National Guard Recruiting Retention Noncommissioned Officer (ARNG RRNCO), it is my intent to not only embrace that phrase, but to embody that concept. If I too, can make that extra effort to make that one more phone call, send that next email, or stop that next person who walks past nothing is going to stop me from achieving my goal.…
Talent Management is utilized to shape how the Army is meeting the priorities established by the highest levels in regards to taking care of the force. Army priorities over the years change alongside national values and leadership. In recent years, the Army has set a focus on Soldiers and their management throughout the lifecycle of their career. Milley communicated the Army’s priority to take care of Soldiers in his Initial Message to the Army when he stated under his number one priority of Readiness, “We must never send our Soldiers into harm’s way untrained” and in his number 2 priority of Future Army, “We need to listen and learn…developing a lethal, professional and technically competent force requires an openness to new ideas and new ways of doing things in an increasingly complex world.” He also states “Our Soldiers are the crown jewels of the Nation.”…
In the movie Moneyball (based on the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis), Billy Beane attempts to form a competitive baseball team for Oakland Athletics by assembling undervalued talent through a sophisticated approach of Sabermetrics. As demonstrated in the movie, a strong team can be built with empirical analysis of the game, answering objective questions and making data based decisions in athletic recruitment as against prejudice, wisdom and gut instincts. The team registered 20 consecutive wins and the sabermetric model became the future of baseball. Mr.Glen Cathey, who is SVP Talent Strategy KForce, writes about the topic: The Moneyball Approach to Recruitment.…

I appreciated Bock's insights on recruiting because he did not take a black and white approach. Rather he describes a mixed approach of selecting the best and looking for potential to train. While I will not be entering the job market anytime soon I find this approach to be the fairest for the new hire compared to the others he described. If you only hire the best in a single concentrated area, you risk having an imbalanced company in regards to talent. The "Bad News Bears" approach almost feels like companies are treating potential employees like charity cases in that they see potential but have a ton of doubt for their success.…
