Spending three weeks in Oaxaca learning about the culture, geography, and history that shaped Oaxaca. This unit is appropriate and relevant to the children in a third-grade class. According to the Scope and Sequence (3.4, 3.9, 3.10), third graders should be learning about how culture, geography, and history shape a community. More specifically, students will understand that each community develops an economic system that addresses three questions: what will be produced, how will it be produced, and who will get what is produced. Students will examine the different cultural aspects of Oaxaca, Mexico. Throughout this unit of study, students will develop be developing comprehension, writing, research, analytic, graph and image skills. With images and other sources that comes from Oaxaca, students will gain a better understanding about the Oaxaca’s culture. Students will be working in groups and independently through this unit study. When students write their poem, opinion-based piece, journal entry, and create a postcard, they will be working individually. When students are creating a poster, the students will be working in groups so they can collaborate and share ideas. The informational text we chose will correlate with the theme of the unit.
