Rockets are tall thin vehicles that are equipped with an engine. A rocket engine functions by burning fuel. Rockets turn the fuel into hot gas, pushing the gas out of its back, making the rocket move forward. Robert Hutchings Goddard is deemed the father of rocket science. Many have contributed to the develop ment of rockets, but the studies of a certain few have been recognized and had an impact on the world of rockets. Russian Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky published Rocket Equation in a Russian aviation magazine in 1903.The equation involves the speed of the rocket and the mass of the rocket, in addition to how fast gas exits and the amount of propellant is present. Robert Hutchings Goddard is credited with creating and building the world’s first liquid fueled rocket. “He published his classic treatise, A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes, in 1919.” (Lehman). Goddard’s book consisted of his awards and accomplishments, as well as his personal life. Last but not least there is Hermann Oberth.Hermann had been interested in rockets at an early age. His studies included multistage rockets and how to use a rocket to escape Earths gravity. The Chinese in the early 1200’s were believed to be the first culture to fly a rocket. They used it for fireworks, which lead to army’s …show more content…
This justifies why rockets can operate in space. Rockets are equipped with exhaust’s. The rocket pushes on the exhaust and the exhaust pushes on the rocket as well. When the rocket pushes on the exhaust it pushes it backwards, and when the exhaust pushes on the rocket it pushes it forward causing motion. There are different types of fuels used to operate a rocket. Rockets use liquid fuel or solid fuels. If a rocket requires solid fuels there are two white solid rocket boosters. These are mainly used in fireworks and model
