Before the Industrial Revolution, transportation was mainly conducted by foot, boats or horse drawn carriage. The last 200 years have brought a whirlwind of major improvements in transportation. The bicycle was invented in the 1800's, allowing an individual to travel short distances easily (amhistory.com). In the 1900's, Henry Ford made automobiles affordable, replacing the horse and buggy as a major source of transportation.
