Part A
In this project I’ll be explaining the theories of stress based on different people, but mainly focussing on the theory of Selye. Seyle’s theory is known as the General Adaption Syndrome.
Before I can do that, I need to thoroughly explain stress and can attribute to stress:-
Stress is the feeling we experience when we feel too overwhelmed and are unable to deal with the magnitude of work, pressure placed on us, this stress is caused by a stressor. A stressor is the stimulant of stress, for instance you are stressed by a pregnancy, finances or most common to my age group, Final examinations, tests and projects. After the first stage, the body’s defences are lowered as the body may need to repair itself and it would require energy to do that. Although our bodies may have lower or weaken defences, it is still on high alert. If continually exposed to stress, the body begins to weaken gradually. We now fully understand to reaction to stress through his three different stages. Coping with stress is always achieved through the physiological and psychological components.
Part B
Stress has now been noticed as a cause for concern in the corporate world. They notice how difficult it is to cope with people who experience stress, and realise that preventing stress early would help with company productivity.
Aetna has come up with a stress programme, to help their employees alleviate stress.
Aetna is a healthcare benefits company in America. They offer a wide range of healthcare insurance. They are one of the largest health care companies in America serving over 36, 4 million people
They work together with Aetna, they believed that they needed to help employees deal with stress and reduce the weight of stress on the employers. They have come up with two programs for stress management.
1- Mindfulness at work(mindful meditation)
2- Viniyoga Stress Reduction (therapeutic viniyoga)
Aetna, Duke Integrative Medicine, eMindful and the American Viniyoga Institute, have worked together to develop these programs. They have achieved decreased levels of stress overtime.
