SPIKING MOVEMENT ANALYSIS 2
Abstract
This paper is set to analyze the phases spiking a volleyball. Movements can generally be separated into three to five main phases. During each phase different muscles, joints, and bones come into play. The phases and all of the parts that combine to constitute a phase can be further broken down. Muscles can perform different contractions and joints can operate in multiple planes and axes. Most actions take place in a combination of planes and axes. Planes and axes are determined by how an extremity or body part deviates from the anatomical position. In a spiking motion, a wide variety of muscles coming into playing from the lower extremities to the upper extremities, even including the neck. Spiking begins in an almost relaxed state where only the neck is performing any contractions, to …show more content…
The phases begin with the Stance Phase, followed by the Movement Phase, Follow-Through Phase, and ending with the Recovery Phase. Analyzing the act of spiking a volleyball, resonates with me because this is a sport I have been involved in for much of my life. Breaking down spiking into its basic phases and researching which joints, muscles, and muscle contractions come into play can create a better understanding of the movement. Possessing a working knowledge of a movement allow for learning better technique and learning ways to improve. Personally, I plan to use the information included in this paper to better my spiking. My season is fast-approaching and this is one part of the game I always seem to have trouble with. Hopefully, this analysis enables me to analyze and look at my own movements collectively for personal improvement and to better reinforce my knowledge when I coach
