In the code there are twenty-five points which then go into further detail of how each can be achieved they are categorised into sub-sections. The first point is ‘Prioritise people’ this has been set in place in order to put the interest of individuals using the services first. They are at the centre of the care, nobody else. (reference the code website) In order to achieve this nurses or midwives need to treat everyone in their care as an individual, each have different needs and therefore need to be cared for in their individual way without being discriminated or mistreated. Also, another point in this section of the code is ‘act in the best interests of people at all time’ this section of the code may arise as being difficult for some nurses and midwives in situations where a patient has the mental capacity of making their own decisions and is refusing treatment for personal reasons but as a professional following the code it needs to be followed, which means they have to set all personal opinions to the side and respect the patient’s wishes.
