The urban green spaces that do exist are unevenly distributed across the city and constantly face the risk of endangerment. When we look at the other side of the Golden Horn (‘new Istanbul side’) for example in districts such as Beyoglu which is considered to be the heart of modern Istanbul, most of the streets are covered in concrete. Green spaces and its planning and management are important when it comes to the social sustainability of a city as well as giving people a chance to take part in different types of leisure and sporting activities. It plays a role in social interaction, cultural identity and community development which are essential factors when it comes to being able to live in a city. According to Mahdavinejad and Abedi (2011), “developing more sustainable cities is not just about improving the abiotic and biotic aspects of urban life, it is also about the social aspects of city life”. The park used to feel immense for us and we enjoyed riding on the teleferik several times in a row. This was until a murder occurred in the park several years ago. Having moved to Turkey last year for school, I started visiting the park again, especially during the summer to get away from all the chaos or passed through it on my way to/back to Taksim or Kabatas. Unable to walk and being pushed in a wheel chair, the wide roads in the park allows my grandfather to get out of the house and get fresh air without being disturbed by fast-walking pedestrians or the danger of motor
