Nursing administrators are faced with many challenges; however, one of the current concerns has to do with the need to strive for quality care which can be even more challenging when the patient 's acuity levels are high. As a nurse, doing the right thing and not causing harm to our patient is the primary goal, but as a nurse leader it means taking into consideration how your organizational system operates and how this not only impacts the patient but your ethical integrity. I recently told someone in an administrative role that I was pursuing my masters in Nursing administration and their comment back was "Oh, you decided to get blood on your hands". Honestly, that statement has been weighing heavily on my heart and I find it very disturbing to say the least. As a analyze the role of ethical issues that I will be faced as a nursing leader, I have decided that this will not be my destiny! As an APRN, I have always been told by my collaborating physicians that "you are my conscience" and I will continue to be a conscience in whatever organization I plan to become a part of. According to Edmondson ( 2010), "Nurse leaders are the creators, keepers, and recipients of the nursing culture of the organization in which they practice"( para 35); therefore, creating a culture that support nurses in speaking up is recommended. The author gives additional guidelines on advocating for healthy work environments which is also a provision in the ANA code status. Edmonson (2010) discusses the 4 A 's: Ask, Affirm, Assess, and Act which is a model created by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses for leaders to use when creating a healthy work environment to help mitigate moral conflict. The importance of education in the area of ethics is another essential tool that will help prepare nurses in addition to leaders in effectively coping with a moral dilemmas.
