English Viking Essay
“The conquerors of the North”
Contrary to most beliefs, Vikings, which comes from the Latin word vikingr ,or pirate in Scandinavian , were not blood thirsty and vicious men most often read about. They were actually farmers, hunter gatherers ,and nomads. Vikings have been given the title of ‘heathens of the North’ in many articles, only due to battles throughout history. Yet, during these times of ‘pillages’ and ‘ravages’ the Russians …show more content…
They would put their dead in a deep pit , or if they were ‘worthy’ of higher honorability , they would be put in a wooden boat , or canoe , and set ablaze with an arrow. Most whom were allowed this were , warriors or leaders whom died, even elders were allowed this . They also used the ‘flaming arrow to boat’ tactic when amongst battle , and they needed a long range weapon , which was used in land and sea battles. Other tactics used when amongst battle in land battles were long axes and shields. In sea battles the used their oars , which were used like the long axes , to push the enemy away. Due to the voyages , gaining foreign mercenaries and new trade. Vikings were given the label of ‘pirates’ . As they did share some traits of the pirates of the west or England. Some argue they were more vicious , than those of the west . As well as more active in the North and East, because the raiding wasn't constant . Yes, it was part of their vast history , but raiding wasn't a constant and shouldn't be use as a cover image for the Vikings whom were so much more .content.time.com.Michael D.
