Set in 19th century Athens, (contrary to ancient Grecian times in the original story.) the film revolves around four lovers and their escape from the marriage laws of Athens at night. They run into the middle of two warring fairies, and everything is thrown out of balance when another fairy slips a love potion to the wrong person. At the same time, a group of rude mechanicals is putting on a play for the Duke and his new wife, even though they are terrible actors, and one of them, even gets turned into a donkey! Even with small, artistic differences from the book, the movie still helped me understand what I had read much better. It not only helped me see the emotion that was supposed to go into the development of every character, but it also gave me a visual of the action that I had just read, and how that all ties together in the story. It therefore made me see how funny the play actually was and how it was actually enjoyable. (This was further enhanced when I worked extensively on the play as a senior while actually in the show.) It all boils down to the fact that it helped me truly appreciate Shakespeare 's work when I had something visual to show me what was happening in multiple
