Jessica Vandeventer George Washington was the first President of the United States. His first term started in 1789, just after the fail of the Articles of Confederation. After the Articles of Confederation failed the founding father got together to fix them, but instead created the Constitution and a new form of government. They created this new for of government intending George Washington to become the President. The position was made with him in mind because he did a great job leading the Continental Army to victory in the Revolutionary War. George Washington did many great things while in office for two terms, each term lasting for four years. He spent time warning against faction, but he also spent time saying that factions are not avoidable and must exist. One of the warnings George Washington give in his Farewell Address was to war against, “foreign influence in innumerable ways, such attachments are particularly alarming to the truly enlightened and independent patriot.”10 He was warning against how foreign influences could affect how factions act, and what the factions say. He goes on in his speech to say how foreign influence uses “the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion.”11 Washington was concerned that the people would take the ideas that they liked from foreign influence to change their way of thinking and cause disharmony in the United States of America. He also says that eventually one faction may take control and cause harm and ruin liberty.12 Washington does not want the people to fall into the arms of a faction who wants to take over the country and change everything that the people were fighting for during the Revolutionary war.
