On January 14, 1730, William and Mary Whipple brought their second of five children into the world, William Whipple Jr. He was a man who accomplished many things in his fifty-five years, wether it be on the sea, the courtroom, or the battlefield. There are three stages in his life that were pivotal in forming who he was, the merchant shipman, the politician, and the general. However, there are there are several words that come to mind which describe him such as, confident, kind, decisive, and wise.…
He was the opposite of his brother, George IV. William served in the Royal Navy and inherited the throne when he was 64. The people called him the "Sailor King." He had no instinct for politics but shepherded major changes during his rule. Slavery ended throughout the British Empire.…
In 1066, King Edward The Confessor dies leaving no apparent heir to the throne of England this leaving Harold Godwinson the King of England. This caused Harold Godwinson, King of England and William, Duke of Normandy to fight for the right of the English throne. This fight is called the Battle of Hastings, which was fought at Senlac Hills which is 7 miles away from Hastings, where William was victorious and got the rights to the English throne. There are many factors which contributed to William’s victory, mainly the superiority of his army, weaponry, tactics and a certain amount of luck on his side. William had a superior, well prepared and well balanced army.…
From his careful play and eventual support of the new king William was granted the title of Earl. This goes to show the political conditions of the time. To appease the people who held power often gave someone the opportunity to gain something themselves. This could change suddenly, though, as conflict killed off many rulers who gave rewards to their circle of followers.…
However, when Edward actually died in 1066, the witan appointed Harold the King of England. As a result, William was outraged and began to plan an invasion to seize the crown for himself. His army was very powerful because the Normans were not only the most successful warriors in Europe, but also had French knights who were promised wealth in England in exchange for fighting. Additionally, he had the support of the most powerful man in Europe, the Pope, because Harold had broken a holy oath. Just as William’s army was about to embark on their journey to England, a north wind started to blow, which stopped the normans from sailing for six weeks.…
I chose King George because I wanted to know more about him. I was interested in this person when I first read about him in the anthology. I read that he was the king of Great Britain which means he is the most powerful man. George taxed the Americans which got the Americans very angry. After that he taxed the Americans on tea, lead, paint, and more items.…
Count William knew he could take advantage of his vassal Hugh because of his rank that was created by the feudal system. Even though Hugh had an important city and had a number of additional claims to other land, William asserted his unyielding power over his territory and thus Hugh’s; Hugh being William’s vassal. William asserted his authority over Hugh countless times, one example being when Hugh had “captured forty-three of the best horsemen” of an enemy and William demanded Hugh to “Hand over the men”. William did so by saying “because you are mine to do my will.”…
Being William was born into lower class, he could have never become a knight, only a squire. However, William became a knight anyways, it was easy to hide his social class because no one knew his father or where he came from. As a knight William took part in jousts. William did well in jousting and ended up going to the world championship back in London.…
Dangerous and self-sacrificial action is often praised because it shows that the hero is brave and courageous. Also, by successfully completing those actions, the hero appears more god-like. By pursuing the limits of human ability, Beowulf wishes to achieve glory, and he seeks the recognition by others that there is something of the divine about him. Traits that all heroes share are strength, courage, honor, adventurous spirit, and nobility. An example of a modern-day hero is a firefighter.…
Just like other heroes, William is not so keen on pretending to be his master, a knight, at the start when his master died. He afraid that he will be exposed and hanged. But he has no choice, he chose to accept the quest and begin his journey as a knight. That is when he “Crossed the threshold” and ready to face the challenge. The obstacles are thrown across his path; whether they be physical hurdles or people bent on thwarting his progress, the Hero must…
I think Arthur is heroic not only because he is brave and courageous but also because he strives to live up to the code of honor he sets for his knights. He really tries to follow his code even when it is not of benefit to him. For example, he give Mordred a place at court because his code of honor requires him to do so even when he know that Mordred is dangerous. He does not want to acknowledge Launcelot and Guenever because it would break the code by bringing a lady to dishonor and would not be in the best interest of the kingdom. Even after he is at war with Launcelot, he is willing to meet with him honorably.…
William was a poor peasant competing in a jousting tournament pretending to be of noble birth. Being one of the best jousters in the completion, William had to fake his gentility to be able to stay in the competitions and win the heart of a beautiful princess named Jocelynn. The strongest attribute of his was in fact courage, to fight his way to the top. The knight was put through many trials, such as when his biggest competitor found out that he was in fact just a peasant. William decided to get imprisoned for fighting instead of running and hiding.…
