What is the ph of pure water? |
Pure water is neutral and has a ph of 7. |
What are acids? |
Acids are substances that produce hydrogen ions H+ (aq) when they are added to water. |
What is an aqueous solution? |
When we dissolve a substance in water we make an aqueous solution. |
What symbols shows that the ions are in an aqueous solution? |
(aq) is the state symbol that shows that ions are in an aqueous solution. |
What makes solutions acidic? |
Hydrogen ions make solutions acidic and they have pH values less than 7. |
What ions are produced by acids when they are added to water? |
Hydrogen Ions. |
What are bases? |
Bases are substances that neutralise acids. |
What do bases do? |
Bases react with acids and neutralise them. |
What are alkalis? |
Alkalis are bases that dissolve in water to make alkaline solution. |
What do alkalis do? |
Alkalis produce hydroxide ions, OH-(aq), in the solution. Alkaline solutions have pH values greater than 7. |
What is the pH scale? |
The pH scale is a scale 1-14 that shows how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Solutions that are very acidic have low pH values of 0-2. Solutions that are very alkalis have pH values of 12 - 14. |
Which indicators can tell us the pH of a solution? |
Universal and full-ranged indicators can tell us the pH of a solution. |
How do indicators mean we can tell the pH of acids and alkalis? |
Indicators have different colours in acidic and alkaline conditions. Universal indicators and full-ranged indicators have different colours at different pH values. |
Which ions react with eachother to form water? |
Hydroxide OH- and hydrogen ions react together to form H20 |
Which ion is present in alkaline solutions? |
OH- is present in alkaline solutions. |
What ion is present in acidic solutions? |
H (hydrogen ions are present in acidic solutions) |
Complete the symbol equation for HCI + NaOH |
HCI(aq) + NaOH ---> NaCl + H20 |
What is the state symbol for liquids. |
(I) |
What is the state symbol for solids? |
(s) |
What is the state symbol for aqueous (dissolved in water) |
(aq) |
What is the state symbol for gas? |
(g) |
What alkaline can relieve the discomfort of a bee sting? |
Baking soda. |
Why would you use bakeing soda and not caustic acid to treats acidic stings? |
You'd use baking soda because its a weak base, I'll neutralise the acid without irritating the skin. ( Stronger base like caustic soda might damage the skin) |
