When was the first recorded instance of AI?
1322 AD- arab chieftain took a cotton pledget from a recently bred mare and placed in another mare's vagina
What are the advantages of AI?
1. Increased utilization of superior sires
2. 90% of genetic improvement is via AI (after 2 generations, male influence in offspring is ~90%) 3. Regular evaluation of semen 4. Can easily transport frozen semen worldwide (increased genetic pool) 5. Eliminates danger, work and expense of keeping a bull 6.Decreased venereal disease transmission |
What are the disadvantages of AI?
1. Increased labor and paperwork
2. Risk of worldwide disease transmission ( add abx to semen to prevent) 3. Sperm from some bulls doesn't cool/freeze well 4. increased animal handling |
Successful AI program depends on:
1. Fertility, health, nutrition and management of females
2. Ability to preserve and properly deliver viable sperm to uterus 3. Inseminate at right time (aggressive/accurate heat detection, effective estrus synch program) 4. Proper semen handling/ AI technique |
How long must semen be in the female repro tract for capacitation to occur?
8-12 hours
What is semen stored in for AI?
LN2 tank- Dewar
In the dewar is a canister, in the canister is a cane, in the cane there are 2 goblets, in each goblet there is 7 straws. |
What are proper semen storing procedures?
1. Store tank where it can be seen daily
2. Routinely measure nitrogen level 3. coordinate rapid transfer between tanks 4. elevate tank off the concrete floor (min conduction/corrosion) 5. Maintain proper inventory system |
How do you thaw semen?
Universally: 95*F water for 30-60 s (when in doubt, use warm water thaw).
Avoid: 1. Osmotic shock: exposure of semen to water 2. Cold shock: sudden decrease in temperature post-thaw |
What are common problems using AI in cattle?
1. Improper timing: MAJOR cause of decreased success!
2. Semen handling (semen hates: light, extreme temp, water) 3. Thawing errors 4. Post-thaw errors (osmotic/cold shock) 5. Poor understanding of Anatomy, improper AI technique |
Where do you place semen in the cow for AI?
UTERINE BODY! (~0.7")
