What characteristics do aves share with reptilia? Which characteristics are unique to aves? |
- lay shelled amniotic eggs (internal fertilization) - scaled legs - enlarged sternum (keel) for flight muscle attachment - reduced organs, hollow bones (lighter) - hollow bill (no teeth) |
|
How does the avian circulatory system differ from the reptilian circulatory system? |
- more efficient (flying is energy intensive) - system has air sacs (continuous one-way ventilation for more oxygen uptake) - four chambered heart, separation into pulmonary and systemic systems |
|
Whats the advantage/disadvantage to being endothermic (aves) rather than ectothermic (reptilia)? |
advantage - wider range of habitats can be inhabited (temperature controlled, produce own heat) disadvantage - metabollically expensive (lots of food is required) |
|
What are some behavioural characteristics that differ between aves and reptilia? |
- parental care (more so in aves: guard eggs, feed/protect young b/c they can not survive independently) -increases survivability but less eggs are produced (usually) - very visual (good eyesight, mating displays) - higher intelligence (learn by watching) |
|
What main functions do wings/feathers serve in aves? |
Flight - different types (acrobatoc/gliding/hoverirng) Camouflage Communication - sexual dimorphiism (identification, mate attraction) Swimminng - waterproof feathers Insolation - prevent heat loss (high metabolism, save energy) |
