A group of northern Democrats who opposed the War, and sympathized with the South during the Civil War. They were against the abolition of slaves. |

A court order requiring jailers to explain to a judge why they are holding a prisoner in custody. |

Battle of Gettysburg |
Fought in 1863, this three day battle was the bloodiest of the entire Civil War. It ended in a Union victory, and is considered the turning point of the war. |

She was a pioneering nurse during the Civil War who later started the American Red Cross. |

African Soldiers |
At first the Union refused to use African American soldiers but as the time passed they eventually created units of black soldiers. |
